The BVHS inpatient oncology unit opened in 1983 to meet the needs of cancer patients and their families in our community. In 25 years, our focus on the community hasn't changed; however, we're proud to say that our services and surroundings have.
The Medical/Oncology Unit is located on the fifth floor of the BVH Donnell Inpatient Pavilion. Our 30-bed unit provides family-based care for adult patients with various medical and oncology needs. Licensed nurses provide total patient care with support from nursing assistants, secretaries and volunteers. Mindful attention to the BVHS mission, unit philosophy, standards of practice, and patient needs are the force behind the exceptional care we provide.
All patient rooms on the Medical/Oncology Unit are private, complete with internet and education access. The unit was designed to be a calming environment to reduce stress, promote healing, and give patients a sense of control over their care. We strive to meet individual patient needs within the hospital environment. Our visiting hours are non-restrictive, determined by the patient and their family.
Our day rooms invite you to sit and relax outside of the inpatient room. A resource center is also located in our north day room, providing educational materials from the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Lymphoma and Leukemia Society, and others. It includes information on cancer, its treatments, prevention, wellness and emotional and spiritual resources.
The Medical/Oncology staff has many years of experience and is specially trained in treating various medical and cancer diagnoses. Medical and Oncology specific competencies are reviewed annually by all of our staff members. Chemotherapy is administered by nurses who have completed the Oncology Nursing Society’s Chemotherapy and Biotherapy course and individual training requirements. A clinical resource nurse is part of the Medical/Oncology team that provides individual training to all staff on the unit to make sure they receive the training and education necessary to provide specialized care to our patients.
Progressive treatment, personalized patient care, staff commitment, and a true team environment will comfort you and your family during your hospital stay. We encourage and support patients and their families when they return to our unit for service and care. We continue to demonstrate our capacity to meet new challenges and keep abreast of the most up-to-date treatment modalities in medical and oncology nursing.
