Tumor Registry is an important part of the Oncology Program.
BVHS' Tumor Registrar collects information about cancer diagnosis and enters it into state and national databases as a way to track cancer incidence and trends. This information is essential for identifying environmental concerns, occupational exposure, life habits, and other factors that may be contributing to the incidence of cancer. It also helps to show the overall impact of current cancer treatments, screening processes and preventative measures. Hospitals use this data to help identify the cancers found in their area so they can determine the best way to meet the needs of their community.
The Tumor Registrar also coordinates a weekly cancer care conference. This conference is made up of physicians, including oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, and family physicians, as well as other staff involved in the cancer care process. Together, they review different cancer diagnoses and determine the best treatment on a case by case basis. The weekly BVHS cancer care conference is CME approved and is one of only three conferences like it that is approved in the state of Ohio.
Finally, the Tumor Registrar coordinates cancer awareness and outreach programs for the community.
