Pediatric Sedation
How long does my child need to be NPO (nothing by mouth) before their exam?
A child between the ages of:

0-5 months: 4 hours before their exam

6-36 months: 6 hours before their exam

36 months and up: 8 hours before their exam

When can my child eat again? What should they eat?
As soon as your child is awake, they may eat. Remember, always start with "light" foods like applesauce, crackers, etc. Anything "heavy" can upset their stomach.

Will my child need an IV?
Depending on the type of exam they are scheduled for, they may need an IV. The radiology nurses will call you before the scheduled exam to let you know for sure. During that call, they will also explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you may have.

Can I be with my child during the exam?
Yes, although you will have to sign a waiver prior to entering the exam room. This is due to MRI and radiation safety precautions(dependent upon what type of exam your child is having).

Who will monitor my child?
Our interventional radiology nurses will monitor your child.

Will my child see a doctor while in the hospital for this test?
Yes, the child will see one of Blanchard Valley Hospital's pediatric hospitalists. A pediatric hospitalist will be nearby during your child's exam.

What is a pediatric hospitalist?
A pediatric hospitalist is a hospital staff pediatrician.

How long will they be sedated? Will they wake up in the middle of the exam?
A child is typically sedated between 30 and 45 minutes. However, if your child wakes up (though not common), we will ask for an additional order from the pediatric hospitalist who will be nearby during your child’s exam.

When will I get the results?
You will receive the results from the physician that ordered the exam. The exams are typically read by our radiologists and a report is then available to your physician within 48-72 hours.
