A Series of Educational Classes for People Facing Cancer   

December 13     Understanding Cancer Treatments
Provide participants with specific information regarding cancer treatment modalities, conventional, investigational and alternative methods of treatment and complementary strategies. Patients and their families will be encouraged to become involved in the treatment decision-making process.    

February 14     Managing the Effects of Illness and Treatment
Concentrate on the health challenges imposed by cancer. An overview of common disease and treatment-related problems, possible strategies, including pain management and nutritional interventions, are presented to help participants begin building self care techniques.    

April 11     Keeping Well in Mind and Body
This class introduces the wellness profile and encourages participants to consider ways of maintaining health in spite of cancer. Strategies for increasing well-being are explored and participants are given the opportunity to learn and practice simple exercise and stress reduction techniques. There will also be a massage therapist present to perform chair massage as well as a local yoga instructor.  

June 13     Communicating Concerns and Feelings
Examine the emotions associated with a cancer diagnosis and how those feelings affect a person’s relationships with others: define communication and clarify it’s importance: introduce skills to improve communication among patients, family members and health care providers.
