Jolene Mintey

Jolene Mintey has worked in the laboratory services field for nearly 30 years. In her job, she comes in contact with nurses, doctors and other health care professionals on a daily basis. She has formed many meaningful relationships over the years, but none as important as the bond she has with surgeon Dr. Eric Browning. Jolene Minty and Dr. Browning

In September 2009, after feeling a lump in her breast while putting on lotion, Jolene saw her doctor who ordered a mammogram. “In less than a week I went from feeling the lump, to having a mammogram and ultrasound, having a biopsy, and then being diagnosed with cancer,” said Mintey. With a whirlwind of information to digest and many decisions to make, Mintey turned to someone she could trust – Dr. Browning.

Mintey explained, “I knew Dr. Browning from my work in laboratory services, so I felt comfortable with him. During my first visit to his office, I was there for three hours. Time was never a concern. Dr. Browning and his nurse explained everything. They answered every one of my questions. They wanted me to be informed so I could make the decisions that were best for me.”

Mintey underwent two surgeries, six months of chemotherapy and 33 radiation treatments. Today, she is considered cancer free and is enjoying life. She is continuing her career in laboratory services and enjoying time with her husband, daughters and grandchildren. She even serves as a champion for breast cancer awareness by hosting a yearly motorcycle run, and donating the proceeds to the Blanchard Valley Health Foundation to benefit breast cancer-related programs at BVHS.

Mintey credits Dr. Browning, and the cancer care team at BVHS for making her breast cancer experience as positive as it could be. She said, “Many people told me I should go somewhere else for my treatment – somewhere bigger or out of town – but I told them that I wanted to get my cancer treatment here. I felt comfortable at Blanchard Valley and I had so many people on my side. The doctors and nurses treated me so well. It was the right choice for me.”
