Melissa Patch

Breast Cancer Survivor

Findlay, Ohio

In December 2012, Melissa Patch made a bet that would save her life. “I told my teenage daughter that if she went to the doctor for a checkup, I would get a mammogram,” said Patch. Her daughter kept her end of the bargain – and, thankfully, so did Melissa. A mammogram and biopsy revealed that she had breast cancer.

Upon hearing her diagnosis, Patch knew she wanted her medical oncologist to be Dr. Sharon Cole. “I chose Dr. Cole because of her reputation. I have always heard that she is an excellent physician, and that made my choice easy.”

Patch underwent surgery to remove the cancerous cells, and then began chemotherapy. She also chose to participate in cancer clinical trials as part of her chemotherapy. Through the clinical trials, she met clinical research nurses Christy Montgomery and Shannon Kohls.

Dr. Cole, along with her nurse, Wendy, lived up to their reputation and exceeded Patch’s expectations, and the addition of Montgomery and Kohls created a true cancer fighting team that Patch is proud to call her Cancer Care Champions.

“Dr. Cole is so compassionate. I felt like I literally lived at her office, but she made it the best experience it could be,” said Patch. “Shannon, Christy and I just meshed. They took such great care of me. They are my friends, and they treated me like family.”

Patch commends her entire team of Cancer Care Champions for their compassion and personalized care. “I never felt like I was just another person who didn’t feel well. They were all fighting for me, and they truly made me feel loved.”
