“There’s no time like the present.” You have likely heard this phrase before. This adage, which can be traced back to the 1500s, has stood the test of time because of its validity and truthfulness. I mention this phrase because it applies to an issue that’s been observed recently in the healthcare industry.
There is a trend that points to a large contingency of people delaying their regular and routine health care. This tendency was first observed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued up to the current day.
What has been observed by many professionals within the healthcare industry is, as people, when we feel uncertainty or increased societal stress (from a pandemic or fear of a recession), we tend to forget about our own well-being and that leads to not taking care of ourselves properly. When we are surrounded by such concerning elements, we do not want to take unknown risks, so, ultimately, we delay care. However, this behavior and mindset can lead to more harm to your overall health.
While we recognize there is an environment of unrest in our current social and economic landscape, there is no better time to make sure you are taking care of yourself. I want to encourage you to stay on track of your basic health needs, and if you have been waiting to schedule an appointment, please consider addressing that now.
I ask this because when people delay care, they often become sicker which leads to further medical needs, more complications and costs down the road. This was one of the many teachings we took away from COVID-19, as many people chose to delay their healthcare needs during the onset of the pandemic.
So, please do not wait and go ahead and schedule your appointments, screenings and procedures. And, please make time to see your primary care doctor, especially if you have not done so in a while or if you think you have signs and/or symptoms of a stroke or heart attack.
If you aren’t established with a provider, Blanchard Valley Medical Practices, a division of Blanchard Valley Health System, has both primary and specialty care physicians who are accepting new patients.
