Radiofrequency Tumor Ablation Introduced at Blanchard Valley Health System

05.29.2025

Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS) is now offering radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a cutting-edge treatment for spine tumors, led by John Ogden, MD, a neurosurgeon at Neurosurgical Associates of Northwest Ohio, a division of BVHS.

RFA is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes targeted radiofrequency waves to remove or shrink benign and malignant tumors of the spine. This innovative technique can be used as a standalone treatment or in addition to conventional surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.

This procedure reduces operative risks, shortens recovery times, and lessens postoperative discomfort. Patients often experience substantial and long-lasting pain relief, improved mobility, and a decreased reliance on medications, especially opioids. Additionally, the precision of RFA allows for focused treatment with minimal impact on surrounding healthy tissue, enhancing safety and efficacy.

"Radiofrequency ablation is a valuable tool in our effort to provide patients with more treatment options that are both effective and less invasive,” said Dr. Ogden. “It allows us to precisely target tumors while reducing the risks and recovery time associated with conventional surgery.”

Before the procedure, patients undergo imaging to map the tumor's location and size. During treatment, a thin, needle-like probe is inserted into the tumor. This probe delivers radiofrequency waves that heat and destroy the tumor cells. As the treated area heals, the cells are naturally replaced with scar tissue, causing the tumor to shrink over time. The probe's heat also cauterizes surrounding blood vessels, minimizing the risk of excessive bleeding, which is a significant benefit for patients with complex or delicate tumor locations.

RFA is often performed in an outpatient setting through small incisions with local anesthetic and minimal sedation. Most patients receiving RFA treatment have only a few days of downtime before returning to normal activities.
