Patient Finds Relief From GERD, Heartburn and Acid Reflux with New Procedure
Pat Jones, husband and father of two from Fostoria, Ohio, has been dealing with severe acid reflux and heartburn for more than 10 years. Jones had taken prescription medicine for the issue, but over time the effects of the medication weakened. When his symptoms began to affect his daily life, Jones turned to the experienced providers within Blanchard Valley Medical Practices. Jones initially made an appointment with ENT & Allergy Specialists of Northwest Ohio. After an upper endoscopy was performed at Gastroenterology Associates of Northwest Ohio, Jones was referred to Dr. Jessica Reynolds, a provider at Surgical Associates of Northwest Ohio, who recommended two options. The options included a fundoplication, which wraps the upper portion of the stomach around the lower portion of the esophagus to help prevent food and fluid from returning to the esophagus, or the new, revolutionary LINX procedure.
The LINX device is designed to treat patients with severe heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and augments the lower esophageal sphincter. The procedure involves the laparoscopic implantation of the LINX device that is comprised of magnetized titanium beads connected by titanium wires, which are placed around the lower esophagus just above the stomach. The magnetic beads constrict to prevent acid from escaping out of the stomach, while allowing the patient to eat and swallow normally. The procedure is done laparoscopically using a camera and tools that are placed through five small incisions, which minimize the recovery time and risks for the patient. Jones opted to proceed with the LINX procedure.
Jones underwent the treatment at Blanchard Valley Hospital, which lasted between 30 to 45 minutes. Once the surgery was complete, he was able to return home that night. The day after the operation, Jones resumed his normal diet, with only a few limitations. Following the procedure, Jones immediately began to notice that his symptoms had nearly been eliminated and was no longer experiencing acid reflux or heartburn.
“I had no idea this surgery existed prior to meeting Dr. Reynolds, but I would recommend this procedure to anyone experiencing acid reflux, heartburn or GERD. Give Dr. Reynolds a call as soon as possible!” praised Jones. “My entire journey with Blanchard Valley Health System was great and I received exceptional care every step of the way.”
