3D Mammography

Blanchard Valley Health System offers digital tomosynthesis at EasternWoods Outpatient Center in Findlay, as well as Bluffton Hospital and the Ottawa Medical & Diagnostic Center.

Digital tomosynthesis is a type of mammogram that creates a three-dimensional picture of the breast using x-rays and allows physicians to examine the breast tissue layer by layer. Digital tomosynthesis of the breast is different from a standard mammogram in the same way a CT scan of the chest is different from a standard X-ray.

Digital tomosynthesis takes multiple x-ray pictures of each breast from many angles. Two digital x-rays are taken from different angles producing a detailed three-dimensional image of the breast’s internal structure. The breast is positioned the same way it is in a conventional mammogram – just enough to keep the breast in a stable position during the procedure. The x-ray tube moves in an arc around the breast while images are taken during a seven-second examination. The information is then sent to a computer, where it is assembled to produce clear, highly focused three-dimensional images throughout the breast.

Images are reviewed by the radiologist who can optimize images by using customized tools at their fingertips built into their workstation. Mammogram results are mailed or emailed to the patient within seven to 10 business days. If recommendations are made by the radiologist, then the patient will be notified by phone from the mammography staff.

This technology will also help find breast cancers earlier and reduce recalls.
