What to Expect When Having Surgery at Bluffton Hospital
Prior to Your Surgery
Call 419.423.5304 as soon as you are notified of a surgery date. Have your insurance card and emergency contact information available.
Call 419.369.2365 for your pre-surgical screening interview. Have a list of your prescriptions and nonprescription medications available.
The purpose of the interview is to:
- Obtain your health history, including previous surgeries.
- Verify the date and time of your surgery.
- Obtain a complete list of your medications.
- Provide pre-operative instructions.
- Answer any questions you may have.
- This information and your pre-operative testing results will be given to anesthesia to review prior to your surgery.
The Day Of Surgery Please DO:
- Do notify your doctor if you experience any health changes before your day of surgery, such as cold, cough, fever or sore throat.
- Do take only the medication you have been instructed to take the morning of surgery with a small sip of water.
- Do wear your hearing aid.
- Do brush your teeth. Be careful not to swallow.
- Do bathe or shower with antibacterial soap the morning of surgery.
- Do wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to the hospital.
- Do arrange for an adult to stay at the hospital with you during your surgery and to drive you home as soon as you are discharged.
- Do bring your insurance card and driver’s license to the hospital.
The Day Of Surgery DO NOT:
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the day of your surgery. This includes water, gum, mints, candy or cough drops.
- Do not smoke after midnight.
- Do not wear contacts or any makeup.
- Do not wear jewelry or bring personal items to the hospital.
- Do not apply any lotion, powder, perfume or deodorant. No fingernail polish.
