Extended Recovery Unit

An extended recovery unit, also known as a swing bed unit, is one in which a patient can swing from receiving acute-care services to skilled nursing services, while remaining in the hospital setting. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) grants approval to critical access hospitals to provide post-acute care in the hospital setting if the facility meets certain requirements.

Extended recovery unit candidates are those who desire rehabilitation in a post-acute care setting and who have a daily skilled nursing need such as IV antibiotics or wound care, or a skilled therapy need for five or more days of physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy each week. They should also have the goal of returning home after their rehab stay.

Referral Process

Patients who are at home could potentially be admitted to the extended recovery unit if they had a three-night inpatient stay within the past 30 days, with a referral made through their primary care provider or home health. For more information about rehabilitation at the Bluffton Hospital extended recovery unit, call 419.957.0555.  BVHS will collaborate with the referral source on the admission process.
