BVH Auxiliary to Create Angel Gowns from Wedding Dresses

10.04.2016

The Blanchard Valley Hospital Auxiliary has instituted an “Angel Gown” program to utilize wedding dresses to create burial gowns for infants. The gowns can be used for stillborn, premature or full term babies that pass away while at the hospital.

“The pain of losing a baby is incomprehensible, but we are hoping to provide at least a small amount of comfort at a very difficult time,” said Heather Schalk, volunteer services manager. “The idea for the program came from one of our volunteers, Sue Leddy, and Gabriel’s Gowns in Toledo, which provides this service to local hospitals in that area, shared a pattern with us to create the gowns. From there, our volunteers have organized cutting and sewing days to create the garments.”

One wedding dress can be used to make 16 gowns, and the Auxiliary will create both gowns and wraps to allow parents the opportunity to choose the item they wish for their child.

The BVH Auxiliary is currently looking for those with sewing skills to help create the gowns. Volunteers can learn more by calling Heather Schalk at 419.423.5342.
