Mary Caughman

Mary CaughmanMary Caughman was a prominent local business woman who owned grocery stores and farmland in and around Hancock County. In 1951, Mary was on her way to Toledo to purchase a wedding dress when she lost control of her car on an icy road. Battered, broken and unconscious she was taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital with slim chance for survival. Eventually wakening from her coma after a month, she worked hard with the help of doctors and nurses to reclaim her health and life. Sadly, her fiancé died before a wedding could be scheduled, but Mary lived to the age of 97 saying she would never forget the care she received after her accident. She held true to that pledge by leaving nearly $600,000 in her will to Blanchard Valley Hospital. It was used to create a public health clinic named in her honor. Caughman Health Center has grown to provide thousands of patient visits annually; linking people of all ages to quality care.
