Prenatal and Postnatal Physical Therapy
Did you know that your pre/post-natal aches and pains aren't always "just something you have to deal with?"
Many pregnant women are well aware of the symptoms of pain and/or swelling at some point in their pregnancy or after their child is born. What most moms, and even some doctors, don't know is that many of these symptoms can be treated by a women's health physical therapist and can be significantly reduced or even eliminated.
Common Symptoms
- Sacroiliac pain
- Back pain
- Hip pain
- Pubic pain
- Upper or mid back pain
- Rib pain
- Neck pain and/or headache
- Leg cramps
- Wrist and hand pain associated with swelling
- Numbness and tingling in arms and hands
The above symptoms of pregnancy can effectively be treated by a qualified physical therapist (PT). The PT can develop safe home exercise programs by giving you tools in the form of exercises and tips to help you manage your pain and discomfort.
Even women on bed rest can benefit from these programs (ask your doctor).
Post-Partum:
Many of the aches and pains experienced during pregnancy resolve after delivery, however, some do not and PT can help to resolve post-partum pain and discomfort as well .
- Physical therapy can help with the following:
- Strengthening abdominal muscles safely
- Correcting pelvic or boney abnormalities
- Mobilize scar tissue after a C-section
- Help with incision pain following a C-section
- Neck or back pain that has not gone away
- Urinary incontinence that continues after four to six weeks from delivery
- Pelvic pain
So don't just accept your pain and discomfort as "normal." Ask your doctor to refer you to physical therapy to help make your pregnancy more tolerable and get back to normal after.
