Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care at BVHS
Our breast cancer team at Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS) provides comprehensive breast cancer care, focusing on survivorship and minimizing the impact of breast cancer on your life. If you or someone you love finds a breast lump, talk to your primary care physician or OBGYN provider as soon as possible to determine the cause and what your next steps should be if additional diagnosis and or treatment is needed. If you do not have a physician, please call our care navigator at 419.425.5657. The care navigators are specially trained to help you find the physician and care that you need. If you would rather search our website for a physician by specialty, please visit bvhealthsystem.org/find-a-doctor.
Advanced Breast Imaging
For evaluation, BVHS has the most advanced imaging technology at convenient locations, so that you can get answers as soon as possible. In addition, BVHS offers advanced diagnostics, if needed, for follow-up care after a traditional mammogram screening. To schedule your mammogram, call 419.423.5323.
Team Expertise for Every Aspect of Care
With a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, patients at BVHS have an entire team fighting for their recovery. Together, the team will determine the most effective treatment plan that may include a combination of radiation therapy, chemotherapy or surgery. Patients can rest assured they will understand each step of care with the support of oncology nurse navigators and financial advocates. Our oncology nurse navigators meet with new breast cancer patients at the initial radiology appointment to review pathology results, so from the very start, you have a team on your side. Talk with your general surgeon if you have questions about breast reconstruction or to learn what type of procedure may best for you. Learn more about our breast cancer surgeons.
With surgical expertise and significant experience in breast surgery procedures, surgeons at BVHS offer a full range of breast cancer surgeries, including:
- Breast conservation surgery: removal of cancer with preservation of the breast, commonly referred to as a lumpectomy, segmentectomy, or partial mastectomy.
- Mastectomy: complete removal of the breast tissue
- Simple mastectomy: removal of breast tissue and the nipple/areolar complex
- Modified radical mastectomy – similar to total (simple) mastectomy with the addition of the removal of the lymph nodes beneath the armpit (axilla)
- Nipple-sparing mastectomy: breast tissue removed with preservation of the nipple for reconstruction.
Our breast cancer surgeons don’t just remove your breast cancer; they look ahead to your survivorship and plan surgery to include:
- Breast surgery: options include expander/implant-based reconstruction and reconstruction using the body’s own tissue.
- Advanced oncoplastic surgical techniques – including enhancement of the native breast appearance after cancer removal, breast reconstruction revision, or “flat closure” after mastectomy.
- Sensation and appearance considerations
- Minimal risk of lymphedema by use of “sentinel node biopsy” techniques
